SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) -- A standout was held outside Benton Park Package Store Monday evening on the issue of poorly working streetlights in Springfield, right near the site of a deadly car accident just over a week ago.

The event was calling on city leaders to do their part, and holding electric companies accountable in making sure that every roadway in the city is properly lit.

Ward 4 City Councilor, Malo Brown, joined in the standout, telling Western Mass News the issues of poorly lit and non-working streetlights have been an ongoing issue in the city, creating safety concerns.

He tells us that even after fatalities have happened in these poorly lit areas, nothing has been done to create safer conditions.

“We’ve had serious accidents and injuries and fatalities year in and year out throughout the city. If you look at our lights right now, you see there’s 4-5 lights out just right here. It’s something I know that the community they’ve been complaining,” Brown explains.

Councilor Malo tells us he does have an upcoming meeting set up with Eversource to further address the issue.

We have also reached out to Eversource as well for comment and are waiting to hear back.
