GREENFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – A suspect wanted in connection with an armed assault in Greenfield has appeared before a judge.

Melissa Sippel, spokesperson for the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, said 32-year-old Carlos Naranjo of Greenfield was arraigned Thursday on charges of armed assault with intent to murder a person age 60 or older, assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, and assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon on a person age 60 or older.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred around 6:45 p.m. Wednesday at Roberto’s Pizzeria on Federal Street. Greenfield Police were called to the scene for a reported armed assault and when they arrived, they found a victim suffering from serious injuries. The victim was first taken by ambulance and then flown by medical helicopter to an area hospital where they are listed in stable condition.

Investigators were able to identify a suspect Wednesday night as 32-year-old Carlos Naranjo of Greenfield, according to Sippel. He fled the scene, but was arrested a few hours later in Greenfield. Authorities believe that Naranjo and the victim knew each other and the attack does not appear to be random.

Following his arraignment Thursday, Naranjo was ordered held without the right to bail pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for April 22.

The case remain under investigation by State Police detectives assigned to the D.A.’s office, in conjunction with Greenfield Police.
