GREENFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -- A Greenfield neighborhood is coming together after a son was accused of stabbing his own father inside a local pizzeria. Carlos Naranjo, 32, made his first appearance in Greenfield District Court Thursday morning.

The stabbing happened Wednesday night inside Roberto’s Italian Pizzeria on Federal Street. According to court documents, Naranjo’s 61-year-old father called 911 around 6:45 p.m. to report his son had stabbed him.

Responding officers found the victim with multiple stab wounds. He was taken to a local hospital, then flown to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield for life-threatening injuries. As of Thursday morning, he is in stable condition.

Naranjo was arrested a few hours after the incident and arraigned Thursday on multiple charges including armed assault with intent to murder a person 60 or older, assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, and assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon on a person 60 or older.

Local residents said they are shocked by what happened. Larry Harnois, a regular at Roberto’s who knows the family, said incidents like this are rare in his neighborhood. “It’s something that doesn’t happen often. This was a real big blow to many people in the community. Just to hear this happen, a lot of people were fallen into it and distressed,” he added.

The pizzeria was closed Thursday. It is unclear when it will reopen.

Other nearby businesses are expressing their support for the victim and his family, including Tim’s Barber Shop just a few doors down. Owner Tim Dowd said he has known the victim and his family for 17 years. Thursday morning and a donation jar was set up on the front desk to help them. “We went ahead and immediately had to start doing a donation for him because (they are) such a wonderful family. I actually grew up not far from where they are as well in Turners Falls,” he explained. “It’s really rewarding because we’ve had a few people coming in that’s not getting haircuts and they’ve been dropping off cash. It felt really good. It’s been really cool seeing it fill up throughout the day today.”

The barber shop has raised more than $220 and plans to have the donation jar out for at least the next month.

The Northwestern District Attorney’s Office said the investigation is ongoing.

Naranjo is being held without the right to bail with a dangerousness hearing scheduled for April 22.
