AMHERST, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - Two people in Amherst are without a place to live after a fire left their home uninhabitable.

Around 4 p.m. Tuesday evening, fire crews responded to 116 Bridge Street after multiple 9-1-1 calls reported smoke coming out from the residence.

We’re told the fire was found surrounding a wood stove in the living area, which was the only source of heat for the house.

After about an hour the fire was put out, but an inspector deemed the building unsafe to live in, leaving the two to find alternate housing.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation but believed to be the stove. Officials say it does not appear suspicious.
