Two suspects facing murder charges after deadly Holyoke shooting

HOLYOKE, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – Two suspects are facing charges in connection with a deadly Holyoke shooting.
Lauren LeBel, spokesperson for the Hampden District Attorney’s Office, said 36-year-old Melquiades Cabrera and 39-year-old Melissa Rosado, both of Holyoke, have been arrested in connection with the incident, which occurred on Wednesday, May 6.
On the night of May 6, Holyoke Police were called to the area of 99 Suffolk Street for a reported ShotSpotter activation. When officers arrived, they found 42-year-old Caleb Rodriguez of Easthampton inside a vehicle near the intersection of Suffolk Street and Elm Street suffering from a gunshot wound. They were able to get into the vehicle and start performing lifesaving measures before Rodriguez was taken to Baystate Medical Center, where he later died.
LeBel added that investigators believe, preliminarily, that Rodriguez was sitting inside his vehicle when a fight, allegedly involving Cabrera and Rosado, broke out. “Evidence gathered during the investigation, including witness statements and surveillance footage, indicates the incident may have stemmed from an attempted robbery,” she explained.
The day after the shooting, local and state authorities conducted surveillance in the area of Franklin Street and Maple Street, which was the last area where Cabrera and Rosado were reportedly seen on a security camera. Both Cabrera and Rosado were taken into custody around 3:40 p.m. in the area of Bristol Place and Commercial Street without incident
Cabrera and Rosado have both been arraigned on a murder charge in Holyoke District and they are being held without the right to bail. Pre-trial conferences for both suspects are scheduled for early June.
The investigation remains ongoing by State Police detectives assigned to the D.A.’s office, the D.A.’s murder unit, and Holyoke Police.
