UMass Amherst restricting dorm guests during Super Bowl weekend

AMHERST, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -- The University of Massachusetts Amherst will be implementing strict guest policies for residence halls during Super Bowl weekend.
Beginning 12 p.m. Sunday, February 8 and continuing through 3 a.m. Monday, February 9, residential students will be allowed to sign-in up to two guests who live in the same residential area as the host. Residents of Northeast may only host guests who also live in Northeast, for example. No other guests from on-campus or off-campus will be allowed into the residence halls.
The policy comes after incidents in 2018 when the Patriots lost the Super Bowl. Laptops were smashed, seven students were arrested, and thousands of dollars worth of damage was done.
Some students expressed disappointment with the restrictions. Quanae Golston-Thomas, a sophomore, said she will have to cancel plans she made with friends at Southwest. “I have heard the stories. I know the reputation, but I think to sort of punish us before it even happens or like punish us for the past when it’s a whole new group of students, you know. We haven’t had the chance to even do that yet,” she explained. “I feel like it’s a little unfair, especially for those of us who just wanna have chill celebration.”
Other students said they expected the policy. Sarah Kopp, a freshman, said she wasn’t surprised by the guest restrictions. “I was kind of expecting it because of the policy during [Blarney Blowout weekend] too and I think on Halloween, they had the same policy,” she noted.
UMass Amherst said this is an exciting weekend for football fans and Patriots fans, and they expect students to celebrate responsibly regardless of the final score.
The university has planned alternative events for students, including:
