UMass Police warns of scam calls using their phone number
AMHERST, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -- UMass Amherst Police are warning about a phone scam using a spoofed caller ID that looks like their business line.
Police said callers reportedly tell people they have a warrant and must pay money immediately to avoid arrest or deportation. They added that legitimate government agencies - such as police, courts, the IRS, Medicare, and the Social Security Administration - will never demand payment over the phone, especially by gift cards, wire transfers, or crypto.
If you get a call like this, you are urged:
Police noted that, if you have already paid or provided personal information, contact your bank or credit card immediate and report the incident to police.
