SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) -- Utility companies are on high alert Monday night as those strong winds threaten to knock out power across the area.

Western Mass News went to the Eversource’s Springfield facility, getting answers after hearing from power experts about their preparations for Mondays conditions.

While those high winds are expected to pick up in our area, utility companies, including Eversource, tell us they’re prepared for whatever comes our way.

In a statement to Western Mass News regarding this upcoming storm, Eversource tells us they are closely monitoring the forecast and planning ahead.

They go on to say, quote:

We also reached out to Westfield Gas and Electric Whip City Fiber to see how they’re preparing for the incoming weather.

General Manager, Tom Flaherty Senior, tells us they have extra crews on standby throughout the week to ensure smooth sailing for customers.

He also offers this safety advice if you see downed wires or power lines. “Stay away from any downed power lines, give us a call, give your utilities a call, and they’ll get people out as soon as possible if it is for the larger utilities, they have a larger geographic footprint to manage so in those cases you might want to call 9-1-1 and have the fire or police department aware of what’s happening in that situation so if they need to have a crew to block off that street then they can do that.”

Flanherty also asks folks to remain patient during these conditions, saying that outages in Westfield are typically anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour long.

Officials are also reminding folks that it’s good to charge up those electronic devices and have things like flashlights at the ready incase power is out for an extended period of time.
