West Springfield diner preparing to reopen after 2024 fire

WEST SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -- A popular Western Massachusetts diner, destroyed by fire over a year ago, is preparing to welcome back customers soon. Michael Alfano, owner of Charlie’s Diner, said the restaurant could reopen in a matter of weeks after more than 16 months of rebuilding efforts.
Charlie’s Diner has been a popular spot in Western Massachusetts since it first opened on Union Street in 1941. Alfano has owned the establishment since 1986. “All of the customers we have now, they’re all like family members, not really like customers anymore. They can get up, get their own coffee, just be natural like they’re home in their own kitchen. It’s just a great thing to all of the people in town,” he explained.
A little more than 16 months ago, flames broke out at the popular diner, spreading shock and sadness across the town. The fire destroyed the diner’s interior, leaving only the shell of the building standing. “I saw the yellow smoke up in the air and knew it wasn’t going to be good. The community was very upset (and) very supporting over the whole thing,” Alfano added.
Despite the devastation, Alfano never gave up. For the last 14 months, the longtime owner has dedicated time, money, and energy to get Charlie’s back up and running. When visited on Thursday, the diner showed signs of progress with a rebuilt sign and new roof. Inside, new equipment filled the kitchen, along with new-look walls and counters. Different memorabilia, donated by Alfano’s friends, has replaced items lost in the fire. “They’re all caring. The builders we have, they get it (the diner) back to, like, its original state, which I think when people walk in, they’ll think it’s like an original diner,” he said.
Alfano noted the diner is now about 95 percent complete. The remaining five percent includes getting plumbing and electrical systems inspected, installing fire alarm systems, mounting dining tables, and ordering food inventory. He is eyeing a grand reopening in mid-to-end of February. “We got people that come from out of town that want to be here. My family is very excited, my kids all grew up here. Just for the town itself, they just can’t wait,” he said.
When Charlie’s Diner reopens, Alfano said he is considering celebrating two other milestones: 40 years of his ownership and the diner’s 85th anniversary. Updates will be posted on the diner’s Facebook page.
