Western Mass community cleans up after winter storm

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) -- Our recent winter storm blanketed much of western mass with close to two feet of snow on Sunday, leaving people scrambling to dig their cars out. Western Mass News spoke to some people around the area to see how they were holding up.
Springfield resident Kester Greene tells us, “I feel like the roads are pretty okay now. And just hopefully everybody stay off of them as much as possible to the city people and do as much as possible to get it clear.”
A prevailing theme we heard from people we spoke with was neighbors helping their neighbors get out of tight situations. Greene wanted to make sure he spread good vibes during the storm.
“Yeah, I was helping some people yesterday and today move their cars out of snowbanks and shovel a little bit. So if I could continue on doing that and have somebody else or spread the word for somebody else to do the same thing, then that would be great because hopefully that all of us in the same city, we all could come together and help each other out and do things a little different because it is cold out here and everything else,” he continues.
Colleen and Rex Derin are visiting West Springfield from Panama City, Florida for the Railroad Hobby show. They say they were taken aback by the amount of snow the area received.
Rex telling us, “This is the first time ever in my life. Yeah, that I’ve been in this...I mean, when we got here, you know, they didn’t say anything about the storm heading this way. And, you know, eventually it came. So we didn’t know anything about it previous from it.”
“You never know what you’re up against coming into New England, right?,” Colleen then added.
Even the residents from the sunshine state had nothing but praise for the city’s cleanup efforts. “It looks like they’re doing pretty good, you know? We were watching out of our hotel room, people getting stuck in the snow and all of the plow trucks coming through. And people working hard and people helping people, too,” they continued.
As cleanup efforts continue, the combination of rapid city DPW response and community support appears to be making a difference in getting the city back to normal.
