WESTFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -- A Westfield business owner is opening his company’s private pools to residents at no charge and the program is drawing crowds.

Clancy Kaye, president and CEO of Pioneer Valley Fiberglass Pools and Spas, launched the free community swim last year after noticing Westfield lacked a public pool. After receiving hundreds of calls and emails from residents, he brought the program back for a second summer. “I said, geez, you know, we have these six beautiful pools here. Why not take advantage of that and invite the Westfield community to come swim in our pool?” he explained.

The program comes at a cost to the business, which hires a lifeguard and covers related expenses. “It is an expense for the company. We hire a lifeguard and have to do some things, but you know what? It’s well worth it. It’s well worth the give back to the community,” Kaye added.

Word of the free swim has spread quickly. Lifeguard Jillian Battles said the pools have been reaching their maximum capacity. “We got up to 30 people on Monday at a time. That’s our max limit but, throughout the day, we definitely had like up to 100 people. People just kept like cycling through. It has been amazing,” she added.

The pool is open to Westfield residents only. The community swim is held at Pioneer Valley Fiberglass Pools and Spas on Southampton Road.
