SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -- A jury found Rebecca Woods guilty of attacking Hampden County sheriff’s deputies with bees during a court-ordered eviction in Longmeadow.

Woods was found guilty of four counts of simple assault and battery and two counts of reckless assault after a trial that lasted five days.

The incident happened in October 2022 at a Longmeadow home. As deputies arrived to enforce the eviction, Woods jumped from her vehicle and smashed open hive boxes and flipped them off a trailer.

Thousands of bees swarmed the area and deputies were stung multiple times. One deputy was stung on the face and head, while another was taken to the hospital.

Neighbors in the surrounding area were also endangered, especially those with severe allergies.

When deputies told Woods some of them were allergic to bees, she responded: “Oh, you’re allergic? Good.”

Thousands of bees died in the chaos and Woods was arrested on scene.

Woods fled before her first scheduled trial in August 2025. Authorities tracked her to a motel in Tennessee, where she refused to return to Massachusetts for more than three months. A governor’s warrant forced her back.

Hampden County Sheriff Nick Cocchi said in a statement that the incident was unlike anything the team has ever experienced. “Our deputies were carrying out a lawful court order and were met with a deliberate act that put lives in danger,” he explained. “We are grateful the jury recognized the seriousness of what occurred and the risk it posed to our staff and the community.”

Cocchi said deputies try to help people through difficult situations. “We don’t just show up to enforce an order - we try to help people through difficult situations,” he added. “That commitment doesn’t change, even in the face of something like this.”

Woods has not yet been sentenced.
