Amherst firefighters move back to Central fire station following renovations

AMHERST — Amherst Fire Department operations have returned to town center, about six weeks after moving to the North fire station to allow both construction work at the nearby Jones Library and improvements to the 68 North Pleasant St. building.
While new drainage and sewer pipes were needed for the expanded and renovated library, the main parking lot at the Central fire station was also dug up so that new underground utility lines could improve electrical service and fiber cables at the 1928 facility.
Over the month of June and into July, all firefighters, vehicles and equipment were located to the 603 East Pleasant St. site, with tents set up on the site.
On Monday, the department’s return was highlighted in a Facebook post, with an accompanying photo:
“The lights are on, the flag is flying and our firefighters are back in their house!”
Having all firefighters at the North fire station, which they dubbed “summer camp,” was only done once the spring semester at local colleges ended and commencement season was over, with generally fewer emergency calls to handle.
There were no other major improvements to the Central fire station, which has been eyed for replacement by a new station south of town center, but firefighters did repaint the upstairs living areas.
