HADLEY — No cause is being identified for the fire that heavily damaged The Massage School, 231 Russell St., on the night of Jan. 3.

Jake Wark, a spokesman for the state fire marshal’s office, wrote in an email that local and state fire investigators determined the fire began in a classroom near the back right corner of the building.

“They found no evidence that the fire was intentionally set, but the exact cause is undetermined,” Wark wrote.

The Massage School offers a curriculum for those pursuing careers as licensed massage therapists. It was founded in 2001 in Amherst and was located in the old Memorial Hall in Easthampton from 2005 to 2023, when it relocated to the Hadley site.

The school has two additional locations, one in Boston, which opened in September 2013, and the other in St. Paul, Minnesota, which opened in October 2016.
