LEVERETT — Three family members and three pets were unharmed in a blaze at 266 North Leverett Road that firefighters managed to keep contained to the basement on Tuesday.

Fire Chief Michael Visniewski said the cause of the fire is still under investigation, though lithium-ion batteries were found on a bench in a home workshop. He said his department was toned out at 4:36 a.m. after receiving a report of an explosion, though that proved to not be the case.

The chief said firefighters’ quick response stopped the basement fire from spreading.

“It never extended into the living area,” he noted.

Visniewski reported, however, that, for safety reasons, the home was left temporarily uninhabitable. He said the family is staying with relatives.

The Leverett Fire Department had assistance from the departments in Sunderland, Shutesbury, Montague Center, South Deerfield, New Salem and Amherst.
