How many crashes did Pittsfield see during the season's first sustained snowfall?

PITTSFIELD — The Berkshires got its first real taste of winter Tuesday, and the weather made for a messy afternoon on the roads.
Between noon and midnight, Pittsfield police responded to 28 crashes, according to Sgt. Shaun Gariepy. None resulted in major injuries, though one driver rolled their vehicle after sliding off the road. Three others reported minor injuries.
By Wednesday morning, the situation had calmed down. Gariepy said there had been no crashes reported since 8 a.m.
In Lanesborough, police took to Facebook on Tuesday urging residents to stay off the roads until plows could catch up.
“Please avoid driving until the roads are cleared,” the post read.
"We’re currently responding to multiple crashes throughout town, and heavy traffic is making it significantly harder for first responders to reach the scenes and assist the victims. For your safety, and for the safety of others, stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.”
The National Weather Service said Wednesday’s forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies and a high near 40 degrees, with a chance of rain or snow showers late in the day. More light precipitation is possible Thursday and Friday.
Another system could move in over the weekend, bringing possible freezing rain Saturday night and rain on Sunday.
