An MBTA Commuter Rail train hit a car that had stopped in its path at Central Street in Acton Thursday evening, officials said.

First responders went ot the area of 117 Central St. around 5:30 p.m. Thursday. There, they learned the driver whose car was stopped on the tracks made it out before the train collided with the vehicle, Acton Fire Chief Anita Arnum and Police Chief James Cogan said in a joint statement.

The car had been pushed about 300 feet down the tracks before it and the train came to a stop, officials said.

Acton firefighters evaluated 44 people on the train and the car’s driver. No one was hurt. Firefighters also worked to contain a fuel spill from the car, officials said.

The driver of the car will be cited, WCVB reported, citing MBTA Transit Police. MassLive contacted police for confirmation.

The collision forced the cancellation of two scheduled commuter rail trips — the 4:25 p.m. train from North Station and the 5:48 p.m. train from Littleton/Route 495.
