A Holbrook police officer pulled a driver from a burning pickup truck Saturday evening shortly after the driver plowed into several parked cars at high speed, officials said Monday while recognizing the officer’s quick action.

The man police identified as the driver, Douglas Silva Soares, 26, of Abington, remains hospitalized but is expected to face charges connected to the fiery crash, Holbrook Police Chief David Del Papa said in a statement Monday morning.

Around 5:45 p.m. Saturday, police officers responded to the crash on South Franklin Street, roughly a block from the Holbrook Town Hall, where they found a white pickup truck had crashed into and “severely damaged” a parked SUV and sedan, Del Papa said.

With the pickup truck on fire and its driver trapped inside, a bystander was trying to extinguish flames with a fire extinguisher, the police chief said.

However, as the flames quickly spread, Holbrook Officer Jonathan O’Brien ordered the group of civilians near the truck to back away as he rushed to pull the driver to safety.

The driver was trapped with a leg injury, O’Brien found. The officer “entered the vehicle, freed the driver and dragged him to safety just before the truck became fully engulfed in flames,” Del Papa said.

Soares was rushed to South Shore Hospital, he said. Medical responders evaluated O’Brien, who inhaled fumes and fire extinguisher residue during the rescue.

Holbrook, a town of 11,000, is roughly eight miles south of Boston.

According to police, Soares was speeding north on South Franklin Street when he crossed over the center line and struck the SUV and the sedan head-on, causing “extensive damage” and sparking the flames that eventually consumed his truck.

Video of the collision published by NBC Boston showed a vehicle slamming into a parked car.

The Holbrook Fire Department was able to extinguish the fire after about 40 minutes, Del Papa said.

The crash also damaged road signs and a property on South Franklin Street.

Soares is expected to face charges of negligent operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of property damage, marked lanes violation and speeding.

Because he remains hospitalized, Soares will be summoned to Quincy District Court at an undetermined date, Del Papa said.

O’Brien was sworn in as a Holbrook police officer in November 2021, according to a department press release from the time.

Holbrook Police continue to investigate the crash.

Police from Randolph, Abington and Braintree also responded to the crash scene, Del Papa said.
