SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – Authorities have made an arrest in connection with a murder that took place over the summer in Springfield.

Springfield Police spokesperson Ryan Walsh said that 21-year-old Lauvanghte Atkins of Springfield was arrested Saturday on the 700 block of State Street following a traffic stop on charges including murder, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded large-capacity firearm on a public way, and oiperating a motor vehicle with a suspended license.

The charges stem from the murder of 35-year-old Webstern Grant-Stovall on July 12. Late that evening, officers responded to the 2700 block of Main Street for a reported shooting victim. When they got there, they found Grant-Stovall, who was taken to Baystate Medical Center where he died from his injuries.

An investigation conducted by the Springfield Police homicide unit, in conjunction with the Hampden District Attorney’s Office, led to Atkins being identified as a suspect and an arrest warrant being issued on Friday. Walsh added that detectives were concurrently investigating Atkins as a suspect in an illegal firearms operation.

Atkins is expected to be arraigned Monday in Springfield District Court.
