President Donald Trump insists the American economy is in a “golden age,” pointing out the price of Walmart’s Thanksgiving meal bundle.

“Grocery prices are way down, and Walmart just announced that the cost of their standard Thanksgiving meal — this is the greatest, their greatest,” Trump said in a speech to the American Business Forum on Wednesday, “It is 25% lower than one year ago. That’s a big deal.”

The problem with that is — you get a lot less.

In 2024, the Walmart Thanksgiving meal featured 29 items, according to a press release from the company last year. EatingWell magazine reported the price to be about $52.

This year, the Thanksgiving meal costs under $40, according to Walmart, but only features 23 items.

The 2025 basket only has one can of cream of mushroom soup compared to the two cans provided in the 2024 meal, according to Walmart’s website. Some items, such as fried onions, were included in both meals but the 2025 list only has 4.5 ounces of fried onions compared to the six ounces in the 2024 list. There are some new additions to the meal, however, such as including a twin pack of turkey stuffing and three boxes of macaroni and cheese.

“This year, Walmart is raising the standard even higher — with the most affordable holiday meal yet,” Walmart wrote in a press release. “Walmart’s 2025 abundant meal basket offers traditional favorites across national and private brands, for a full holiday feast serving 10 people for under $4.00 per person — the lowest price since Walmart started the program!”

Trump has continued to talk about Walmart’s Thanksgiving deal following times Wednesday’s speech and took to social media, urging Republicans to tout the deal more often."

“Walmart just announced that Prices for a Thanksgiving Dinner is now down 25% since under Sleepy/Crooked Joe Biden, in 2024,” Trump wrote. “AFFORDABILITY is a Republican Stronghold. Hopefully, Republicans will use this irrefutable fact!”

Following Democratic electoral victories in New Jersey and Virginia on Tuesday, Trump has repeatedly claimed his administration has made life more affordable for Americans.

“We are the ones that have done a great job on affordability, not the Democrats,” Trump said on Nov. 6 while talking to reporters in the Oval Office. “But we just lost an election, they said, based on affordability.”

The NBC News grocery price tracker shows that from Oct. 26, 2024, to Oct. 18, 2025, several staple items increased in price: eggs increased by 24 cents, ground beef by 84 cents, orange juice by 72 cents, bacon by 44 cents and bread by 2 cents."

Walmart did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Friday.
