Veterans honored around the county

Across Hampshire County, Veterans Day breakfasts and ceremonies will take place to honor those who responded to the call of duty.
On Saturday morning, the Northampton Council on Aging (COA) will hold a breakfast beginning at 9 a.m. Then on Tuesday, the Northampton’s Veterans Day parade will step off at 11 a.m. The parade will go from the Florence VFW at 18 Meadow St., and end at Trinity Park. Casey Fowler, a Cooley Dickinson nurse practitioner who served in the Navy in the early ’90s, will be the guest speaker.
On Sunday in Chesterfield, the Chesterfield General Store will host a breakfast at 10 a.m. Northampton Veterans Service Officer Dan Nye will speak. To reserve a spot, contact the town’s COA.
On Monday, the Hatfield COA is sponsoring a breakfast for veterans and significant others from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Guest speakers will be state Rep. Lindsay Sabadosa, D-Northampton, and veteran service officers Steve Connor and Rebecca Twining. To reserve a spot, call the senior center at 413-247-9003. Also in Hatfield, there will be a ceremony held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in front of Town Hall at 59 Main St.
The Worthington COA is hosting a veterans appreciation potluck at noon at Town Hall. Norman E. Anderson II will give a presentation about his mother, Dorset Anderson, and her years in Vietnam as a “Donut Dollie.” The presentation will feature pictures of Dorset and a film.
In Granby, a ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. at the town’s Veteran Monument on 257 State St.
In Holyoke, veterans will be honored on Tuesday in the War Memorial Building at 310 Appleton St. Refreshments will be served at 9 a.m. before ceremonies begin at 10 a.m.
On Tuesday at 10:45 a.m., Amherst will hold a ceremony on the North Common. Psychotherapist, author, poet and international pilgrimage guide Ed Tick will be a guest speaker. Although he never served in the military himself, Tick’s life has been dedicated to treating veterans’ mental health disorders, and began writing on these disorders in 1979 before the term Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder was used.
In South Hadley, a brief ceremony will take place at 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday morning at Town Hall, 116 Main St.
Belchertown will come together in the high school’s Veterans’ Memorial Auditorium at 11 a.m. on Tuesday. The ceremony will feature performances by the Chestnut Hill Community School band and chorus, along with participation from local Scouts from Troops 57 and 167.
The Williamsburg Memorial Park at 6 Main St. will be the backdrop for the town’s Veterans Day ceremony, slated to begin Tuesday at 11 a.m.
