CHESTNUT HILL – Boston College football came up three points short of ending a nine-game losing streak, registering an unimaginable upset, and upending the power structure in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

No. 14 Georgia Tech averted a catastrophe when placekicker Aidan Birr’s 23-yard field goal attempt sailed through the uprights with 11 seconds remaining to give the Yellow Jackets a 36-34 victory over BC on Saturday night at Alumni Stadium.

Georgia Tech improved to 9-1 and 6-1 in the ACC to remain tied for first with Virginia (9-2, 6-1) with two games remaining, a league contest against Pittsburgh and a non-conference match against Georgia.

BC (1-10, 0-7) will enter its second bye week and closes out the season at Syracuse on Nov. 29.

It was a great effort, I’m very proud of these guys and very proud of this team,” said BC coach Bill O’Brien. “This team never quits. They show up for practice every day, and it is a tough loss.

“I feel terrible. I wish I could have figured out a way to get two more points. I think these guys have given us everything they have got, and I have their backs for the rest of their lives. It is a great group of kids.”

The game also featured two major milestones in the phenomenal career of redshirt senior wide receiver Lewis Bond, who finished with eight catches for 104 yards. Bond upped his single-season total to 81, breaking the old record of 78 shared by Zay Flowers and Alex Amidon. He now has 206 career receptions, breaking Flowers’ record of 200.

“He’s a great player, one of the best to ever play here, and he did an awesome job for us this year,” said O’Brien. “We just need him to do another good job against Syracuse. He has a great legacy here and Boston College, and wish we could have sent him out a winner tonight.”

The quarterback play was exceptional from both camps. Tech’s Haynes King, a Heisman Trophy candidate, completed 26-of-34 passes for 371 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions. BC’s Dylan Lonergan was equally effective, completing 26-of-40 for 362 yards and two touchdowns with zero interceptions.

“He (Lonergan) played his butt off, he just did a great job, and he played his tail off,” said O’Brien. “That Haynes King, he wills his team to win, and they were one point better than us tonight.”

BC also got its strongest effort from the tailbacks this season. Turbo Richard galloped for 141 yards on 11 carries for a 12.8 yards per carry and two touchdowns. Jordan McDonald chipped in with a 14-yard touchdown run that put BC up 21-14 in the third quarter.

“Turbo was running his ass off all night,” said Lonergan. “He was running well and our line was run blocking and pass protecting all night, and that made the play action game and the quick passing game easier for me all night.”

BC opened the second half with a seven-play, 75-yard, scoring drive to go up 21-14 with 12:05 to play. BC hadn’t led a game since going up 3-0 in the first quarter at Louisville on Oct. 25. Richard’s second explosive run of the game went for 37 yards to the Tech 14. McDonald scored on a 14-yard run up the middle for his second of the season.

The Yellow Jackets ensuing 15-play drive stalled on the 17. Birr cut BC’s advantage to 21-17 with a 34-yard field goal with 4:25 to play.

BC refused to play passively and ripped through the Tech defense with an aggressive scoring drive that covered 75 yards on six plays. BC opened the drive with a 32-yard pass from Lonergan to Bond at the Tech 43. The catch was Bond’s record-breaking 79th of the season. BC scored on an 18-yard pass from Lonergan to Reed Harris to make it 28-17 with 1:19 to play.

Georgia Tech had its second straight long drive stall inside the BC red zone. The Jackets’ 10-play drive ended with a 26-yard field goal by Birr to make it 28-20 with 13:42 to play.

Georgia Tech tailback Jamal Haynes cut the lead to 28-26 on a 2-yard run with 7:33 to play. King’s designed run on the 2-point conversion attempt was snuffed short of the end zone.

After the Jackets’ defense forced a three-and-out, Georgia Tech took a 33-28 lead on a 54-yard run by Jordan Allen with 6:14 to play. BC went back up 34-33 on a 43-yard touchdown run by Richard with 4:09 to play. Lonergan’s PAT pass to Chudzinski was incomplete.
