AMHERST — The Amherst girls tennis team defeated East Longmeadow in the Western Mass. Class A semifinal round on Monday night, winning 4-1.

After beating the Spartans in their two matchups earlier this season, the Hurricanes knew what it took to walk away with a victory, but couldn’t let the playoff pressure get to them.

“I actually don’t think they felt any added pressure, because I think this group of kids is generally very even-keeled,” Amherst head coach Claire Cocco said. “They just kind of saw it as another match, and were mentally ready. They’re always ready for every game.”

The courts at Amherst Middle School were covered by the sun, with the temperature at the match’s starting time reading a toasty 89 degrees. Players on both sides battled the heat, maintaining a high level of play despite the conditions.

Dominating the singles courts was the main goal for the Hurricanes to set the tone on Monday. Emma Learned-Miller competed on the first singles court, comfortably earning a 6-2, 6-1 victory.

Learned-Miller and Mahima Ganesun have formed a formidable duo at the top two singles spots, with Ganesun also winning her matchup, losing just one set on the night, 6-0, 6-1.

“They’re really incredible,” Cocco said of her top two singles players. “They bring it to every match. They’re just always learning and taking in our coaching. They make it look easy, but it’s really not. And we really respect how much hard work they do, because their scores may make it look easy, but they really work very hard.”

Marin Carlyon played third singles for Amherst in the win, completing the singles sweep with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. The sophomore was aggressive on the court, a trait that the Hurricanes have been working on as a team all season long.

“We’ve been trying to coach them to be a little less predictable with their shots,” Cocco said. “Take a little more risks. We definitely saw some of that going on, which is exciting.”

On the first doubles court, Janaki Ewoton and Cynthia Tian also showed off some of that newfound aggressiveness, dominating their matchup to the tune of a 6-2, 6-0 victory.

The second doubles court was by far the closest matchup of the night, with each set coming down to the wire. Mya Glace and Amrita Das came up just short for Amherst, losing a tough 4-6, 6-7 battle.

“I was just really proud that they never gave up,” Cocco said of her second doubles pairing. “Right to the end, they were battling and fighting… Everyone was rooting for their team down there to play hard.”

With the win, the Hurricanes earned a trip to the Western Mass Class A title match, set to take on Longmeadow on Tuesday, May 19, at 7 p.m. at Longmeadow High School.

The Lancers are the only team to defeat Amherst on the season to this point, with two losses coming from the first match of the season and just one week prior to the finals on May 12.

“We took careful observations of what happened, and have been working on certain aspects of our game to try to have an answer for Longmeadow, but we’ll see,” Cocco said.
