BOSTON — Brandon Carlo returned to Boston on Tuesday for the first time since the Bruins traded him to the Maple Leafs.

A tribute video played on the jumbotron in the first period that showed highlights of Carlo’s nine years in Boston. The TD Garden gave him a loud ovation as Carlo saluted the crowd with his stick and tapped his heart.

The Bruins went on to win, 5-3.

“This city means a lot to me,” Carlo said after Tuesday’s practice. “I feel like I grew up here, in a way. I was young when I came in. Met a lot of special people in this city. Have some great friendships. But overall it was a big honor to be a part of this organization and to be a part of this city for sure. I feel lucky for that chapter I had in my life.”

Carlo began his NHL career with the Bruins in 2016-17. He became an important part of Boston’s defense over the next nine seasons.

The Bruins traded Carlo to the Maple Leafs in March for two draft picks and Fraser Minten, who Marco Sturm called “the best player on the ice” after Boston’s win over Toronto on Nov. 8

“He was just very, very calm. The little details he had. He was ready to go. He wanted to be out there,” the Bruins coach said. “For me, it’s impressive. Because a lot of young kids, they don’t. Especially in tight games and you got traded from that team. I loved his game.”
