Holyoke’s youth track and field program, the Paper City Flyers, had several standout performances at the Region 1 USATF Junior Olympic Qualifying Meet at Fitchburg State last weekend.

Fourteen Flyers competed in the event and 10 advanced to the next round of competition.

Among the top team finishers included Esther Nwabunor, the winner of the 800-meter hurdles championship in the girls 11-12 division and Ava Rios, the runner-up in the shot put in the girls 9-10 division.

Ngozi Nwabunor rounded out top-three finishes among Flyers competitors, grabbing third place in both the shot put and discus in the girls 13-14 division.

Rachel Beauregard also advanced to the next round of competition, the USATF Region 1 Junior Olympic Championships, with her Flyers teammates after two top-12 finishes in distance events.

“We are proud of the effort, discipline, and growth shown by these young athletes,” Flyers head coach Kevin McDonald said.

The USATF Region 1 Junior Olympic Championships will be held at Gordon College from Thursday, June 25 to Sunday, June 28.
