H.S. Roundup: Amherst boys lax scores early and often in win over Belchertown

The Amherst boys lacrosse team secured its first win of the season in its 16-4 victory against Belchertown on Tuesday.

Taylor Leiva and Sawyer Ferro each scored four goals for the ‘Canes, while Tri Nguyen led the victors with eight points (three goals, five assists).

Brian Sibrian Cruz (six points) also played well for Amherst.

Hurricanes goalie Jason Kim made nine saves in the victory.

The Orioles scored twice during the second quarter, then once each in quarters three and four in their second straight loss to start the season.

Girls lacrosse

Granby 14, Chicopee Comp 5 — Brenna Moreno and Kalli White carried the Rams past the Colts on Tuesday, combining for nine goals and 13 points.

Moreno led all players with six strikes, while White recorded a hat trick and dished out four helpers.

Mylin Laliberte (hat trick) was Granby’s only other multi-point getter in the win.

Rams goalie Faith Ramos concluded with five saves.

Mount Greylock 19, South Hadley 9 — A pair of hat tricks from Ella Haber and Kelcey Zraunig powered the Tigers in the loss.

South Hadley goalie Dee Haber had seven saves.

Baseball

Belchertown 4, Pioneer Valley 0 — Two doubles from Nathan Marino highlighted the Orioles’ offense in the shutout victory.

Marino mashed three hits total for Belchertown in its second consecutive victory.

Ryan Gould was excellent on the mound for the O’s, tossing a complete-game, one-hitter. Gould grabbed four strikeouts in the process for Belchertown.

Softball

Northampton 10, Mohawk Trail 7 — The Blue Devils came back from an early 5-0 hole against the Warriors to move to 2-0 on the season.

Mohawk scored five in the top of the first, but Northampton proceeded with six runs of its own during the bottom half of the inning, to lead, 6-5.

Emily Kajka was Northampton’s top hitter, finishing with three RBIs while going 2-for-3. Ryleigh Pease, Jayda Alejandro, Greta Lepore and Jani Gotay each added two hits as well for the Blue Devils.

Boys volleyball

Sci-Tech 3, Belchertown 2 — The Orioles erased a 2-0 set deficit, but ran out of gas in the deciding fifth set to drop their first contest of the season.

Set scores read 21-25, 18-25, 25-19, 25-12, 3-15.

Shea MacLean and Gavin Couchon combined for 27 kills for Belchertown, while Arda Cayan tallied 37 assists.
