The Celtics played another close game against the 76ers, but once again, they faltered in a clutch game. The C’s have done well to play in multiple close games this season, but executing down the stretch has been another issue.

This time, the Sixers came away with the 102-100 win over the Celtics on Tuesday in Philadelphia. Kelly Oubre’s put-back layup was the difference in the game. Afterwards, Jaylen Brown blamed himself for the loss, saying he wasn’t good enough as the Celtics fell to 5-7 on the season.

“Just little possessions, little stuff throughout the game we have to be better at,” Brown told reporters, via CLNS Media. “Tonight was not a good example of that. Poor performance by me on both sides of the ball. I let my guys down tonight.”

Brown finished with 24 points, six rebounds and five assists, shooting 8-for-18. But it was a slow start for Brown and the Celtics as they shot just 28% from the field in the first half. The third quarter was where the C’s did plenty of damage, outscoring the Sixers 36-20. Brown scored 14 points in the frame as he woke up after the first half.

Still, the Celtics couldn’t make the winning plays down the stretch. They had one final possession to try to tie the game, but they couldn’t get a clean shot off. The Celtics are now 2-5 in clutch games, which are defined as games that are within five points with less than five minutes left on the clock.

The season is still young and the Celtics have flirted around the .500 mark. They’ve pointed out that if a few possessions had gone their way, the record would look a lot better. But as the clutch game losses pile up, the C’s will need to find ways to close out games and victories.

“I thought that if I went to go make a play, there wouldn’t be enough time for them to get a shot off,” Brown said of the Oubre offensive rebound. “End up leaving (Edwards) wide open for a 3. And then was kind of like, (expletive). Oubre kind of I guess just slipped behind me for an easy offensive rebound. I got caught ball watching. I just gotta get in there and get in the fight.”
