Landon Nycz highlights UMass hockey’s loaded 2026 NHL Draft class

Eight players affiliated with the UMass hockey team were selected during Day 2 of the NHL Draft on Saturday.
Rising sophomore defenseman Landon Nycz went to the St. Louis Blues with the 107th overall pick (fourth round). Nycz had three points in 35 games with the Minutemen as a true freshman and was the only current UMass player to be plucked by an NHL squad on the weekend.
The seven other names will suit up for the Minutemen as soon as this fall, led by goalie Tobias Trejbal, who was selected by the Calgary Flames with the 42nd overall (second round) pick. Trejbal was the highest draft pick of the UMass commits on Saturday and the Flames prospect will vie for the Minutemen’s starting job in 2026-27 as an incoming freshman.
Oleg Kulebyakin was taken a few picks later during the second round, going to the Tampa Bay Lightning at 52nd overall. The Russian forward is slated to arrive in Amherst for the 2027-28 season.
Samu Alalauri was the second pick of the third round as the incoming freshman defenseman was chosen by the Chicago Blackhawks at 66th overall.
Two more players as part of the Class of 2030 were selected as Egor Barabanov (fourth round, 100th overall to Calgary Flames) and Jasper Kuhta (seventh round, 197th overall to Dallas Stars) will bring UMass’ total draft picks up to 11 for the 2026-27 roster.
The Minutemen’s remaining two selections were both in the fifth round as Finn Kearns (131st overall to the Seattle Kraken) and Alexandre Taillefer (135th overall to the Winnipeg Jets) heard their names called. Both will be freshman in the 2027-28 season, while Alexandre’s brother, Mathieu, is part of the incoming freshman class.
