MILFORD — The Northampton Legion Post 28 baseball team lost in a lopsided, 24-5, elimination game to Milford Post 59 at the Senior State Legion Baseball tournament at Fino Field on Sunday afternoon.

Milford raced out to a 5-0 lead during the top of the first inning, courtesy of four RBI base knocks, then blew the game open with a 12-run second inning, to hold a 17-0 advantage after two frames.

While Post 59 cracked seven hits during its early onslaught, defensive misplays and walks from Northampton extended Milford’s scoring opportunities throughout the opening pair of innings.

“We got down early, we weren’t able to make some plays and it kind of was a snowball effect,” Post 28 head coach Adam Krol said. “It’s not indicative of our season or the character of our team. Sometimes you get beat.”

Northampton starter Andrew Gagne lasted 1 1/3 innings, surrendering eight runs. Tom Moore, Matt Vassallo, Carter Styspeck and J.J. Scanlon-Dean pitched in relief in the five-inning, run-rule shortened affair.

Despite the defeat, Post 28 had its best season since Krol took over coaching duties, recording an overall record of 14-7-0 and qualifying for the state tournament for the first time since 2017.

“There’s nothing like our Post 28 family,” Krol said. “It’s a blessing to represent the community with this group of young men. It’s really something special.”

Sandwich Post 188 6, Northampton Post 28 — Northampton was blanked in its first game of the state tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Sandwich pitchers Tyler Jones and Kolby Polisky tossed a combined three-hitter for the victors. James Lavallee (loss, four innings, five runs) and Harry LaFlamme (two innings, one run) were the arms used by Post 28.

Carter Styspeck, Matt Vassallo and J.J. Scanlon-Dean produced Northampton’s hits.
