Local athletes excel at MIAA Div. 6 track and field championships

Three local athletes brought home individual first place medals at the MIAA Division 6 track and field championships on Thursday and Saturday.
Luke Howard of the Frontier Regional boys team won the 2-mile individual championship on Thursday. Howard ran a personal best in his first place (9:25.82) performance. Matthew Pilon of Lunenburg was second (9:26.03). It was Howard’s first win in state competition during his distance running career for the Redhawks.
“Going into the race I wasn’t really aiming for winning it,” Howard said. “I was just looking for a quick time. I just wanted to see what my body could do. Matthew Pilon of Lunenberg was really sticking with me. I was really glad to win that. Just a lot of pride. Just really proud of myself.”
The meet split between Thursday, with the conclusion coming on Saturday on the campus of Westfield State University. Area athletes dealt with cold and windy conditions before a popular appearance from the sun.
Howard followed with a third place (4:22.67) finish in the mile on Saturday. The run was a personal best for Howard. Teammate Evan Hedlund was fifth (4:23.45) in the mile.
“The main problem with me is moving around traffic,” Howard said of the mile. “Everyone is in similar fitness, and we are trying to move around each other without impeding each other’s space. It didn’t go as planned, but still a great race and a P.R.”
Teammates Evan Hedlund was fifth (4:23.45) in the mile. South Hadley’s Trevor Sullivan ran a personal best (9:34.86) in the 2-mile, good for sixth place.
The pole vault also produced another individual state championship for the Redhawks. Adrien Pazmandy secured the first-place medal with a vault of 13 feet. The senior hoped to get a personal best at the meet, but an individual championship will make do until the next competition.
“I was hoping today would be the day,” Pazmandy said. “But it still was a good day. I am not complaining. It was great. “
Frontier pole vaulting legend Jack Vecellio helped Pazmandy through his early years with the event. Mohawk’s Tristan Feinstein, a freshman, placed fourth (11-6).
“He (Vecellio) was my mentor and inspiration from the start,” Pazmandy said. “Glad I could live up to him.”
Matt Gillis took home a state championship in the pentathlon for South Hadley on Thursday. Gillis also placed second (44-10) in the triple jump for the Tigers, achieving a personal best. Trevor Sullivan set a new school record in the 2 mile as well, registering a 9:34.86 for sixth place.
Mason Youmell of Greenfield placed second (56.50) in the 400-hurdles. Aiden Calcano Da Silva was a blur in the race, finishing in first place (53.79) by almost three seconds. Youmell took third (15.55) in the 110-hurdles for the Green Wave. The senior added a second-place finish (12-6) in the pole vault behind Pazmandy.
Julian Adams of Frontier registered a personal best (164-04) in the javelin, which was good for third place. The South Hadley relay team of Anthony Adams, Chase Pecia, Gillis and Hunter Kelly finished second (3:39.74) in the 4×400 relay. The run was a personal best for the team.
Brooke Hockenberry placed second (2:18.38) in the 800-meter for Hampshire Regional. Teammate Meghan Wood took third place (33-00.75, PB) in the triple jump for the Raiders. Kathleen Barry ran a personal best (11:34.58) in the 2-mile for Hampshire.
Hockenberry also finished second in the mile (5:07.39). The sophomore blasted past the pack on the final stretch to achieve a personal best. She knew there was enough left in the tank.
“I knew going into the fourth lap,” Hockenberry said. “I knew it looked like I was starting to draft on them.”
During an indoor race during the winter, Hockenberry fell off the pack toward the end. The pack helps Hockenberry’s competitive fire.
“I knew if I could stay relative enough, I could just go,” Hockenberry said. “The adrenaline of the meet was just there. For me it’s someone to beat and someone to chase. It’s someone else trying to push it with you.”
Evelyn McKenna of Parker Charter Essential placed first (5:04.32) in the mile.
Mahar Regional’s Stellina Moore finished in third place (10-6) in the pole vault. Kyra Tamsin placed sixth (1:08.97) in the 400-hurdles for Greenfield.
There was plenty of local representation in the high jump. Frontier teammates Louise Flagollet and Maia Christensen along with Moore finished fourth (five feet) and tied for fifth (five feet) respectively. Flagollet added a seventh place (1:01.45) finish in the 400-meter, a personal best time. Eighth grader Charley Harrington placed sixth (34-02.75) in the triple jump for Frontier.
The Hampshire Regional 4×800 team consisting of Ada Corner, Amelia Perry, Hockenberry and Charlotte Letendre placed third (10:02.78, PB).
Natalie Rios was second (118-05) in the javelin for the Tigers. Teammates Aimee George took third (117), achieving a personal best. Mohawk’s Morgan Raffa was sixth (107-07). Raffa notched a personal best (109-09) in the discus, good for second place for the Warriors.
Abington won the boys team championship with 76 points. Frontier tied for fourth (38) in a field of 47 teams. South Hadley placed seventh (36). Greenfield finished in 11th with 26 points. Ayer Shirley took the team championship on the girls side with 71 points. Hampshire placed sixth with 34.5 points. South Hadley (18 points) and Frontier (19 points) were 18th and 19th, respectively.
