Man seriously injured after car crashes into U-Haul in Sturbridge Friday night

A 23-year-old man was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries after the Toyota Corolla he was driving crossed the center line on Route 131 in Sturbridge and collided with a U-Haul, according to police.
First responders went to 142 Main St. in Sturbridge, which is Route 131, around 9:30 p.m. on Friday. At the scene, officers found a man with serious, life-threatening injuries, Police Chief Earl J. Dessert said in a statement posted to Facebook.
An officer “quickly and efficiently applied a tourniquet to the driver’s injured arm, which undoubtedly contributed to saving his life,” Dessert said.
Officials called Life Flight to the scene, which sent a ground team due to weather conditions. The man was taken to Harrington Hospital by Sturbridge emergency medical services before Life Flight took him to UMass Memorial Medical Center.
The passenger in the Toyota was also taken to the hospital as a precaution. The occupants of the U-Haul were not hurt.
Police believe the Toyota crossed the center line and collided with the U-Haul, Dessert said.
“Speed and alcohol both appear to have contributed to the crash,” he said.
