South Hadley’s Natalie Rios earns first place in girls javelin at Day 2 of Meet of Champions

South Hadley’s Natalie Rios took home first place in the girls javelin throw on Saturday at Day 2 of the MIAA Meet of Champions at Merrimack College. The junior’s throw of 125 feet, four inches (38.20m) was atop all other competitors at the meet, while also being the third-best throw of the year in the state.

Six other Hampshire County schools joined the Tigers at the meet held in North Andover, with Amherst, Belchertown, Easthampton, Hampshire, Holyoke and Northampton all each having at least one representative.

Yasani Thompson was great in her two events for the Purple Knights, with her time of 24.82 in the girls 200-meter good for third place. The senior then had another solid showing in the girls 400m, finishing in seventh place with a 57.90.

Ella Hoogendyk of the Blue Devils was up there as well, grabbing eighth place in the girls 400m with her 1:05.73. Hoogendyk also finished in fifth place in the girls triple jump, measuring in at 37 feet, 8.50 inches (11.49m).

Along with her individual success, Hoogendyk, along with Maddalena Figueroa-Starr, Katherine Munson and Keira Cole clocked a 9:28.27 in the girls 4x800m relay, good for sixth place. Mairead O’Neil rounded things out for Northampton, coming in seventh place in the girls two mile with a time of 11:05.28.

The Hurricanes had a few top-five finishes over the weekend, led by Ololara Baptiste, who clocked a 56.56 to earn third place in the girls 400m. Nicolas Lisle did well in the boys 800m, coming in fourth with a time of 1:54.95.

Baptiste, along with Ella Austin, Maeve Fitzgerald and Claire Fortin, earned fifth place in the girls 4x400m relay, posting a time of 3:59.69.

Aubrey Klingensmith was the lone Oriole to make an appearance, taking home ninth place in the girls javelin with a throw of 112 feet, nine inches (34.36m).

Matt Gillis also placed top-10 in his one event for South Hadley, with his boys triple jump of 45 feet, 00.50 inches (13.72m) earning him 10th place.

Hampshire’s Brooke Hockenberry rounded out the weekend with a top-25 finish in the girls mile. The Raiders’ sophomore grabbed 25th place in 5:10.91.
