Bill Belichick and UNC fell to 4-6 after a 28-12 loss to Wake Forest on Saturday. The Tar Heels have two games left in Belichick’s first season as coach.

UNC didn’t find the end zone once during Saturday’s loss, and now its playoff hopes are further out of reach.

The Tar Heels won their last two games going into the weekend and appeared to find some footing under Belichick, but they couldn’t make it three straight wins as Saturday’s loss served as a reminder that the adjustment from NFL to the college level will take time.

Here’s a roundup of what’s being said about Belichick’s latest loss.

The New York Post

“The Tar Heels, who entered Saturday on a two-game winning streak, failed to reach the end zone once, with all of their points coming on four field goals.

“North Carolina converted on just four of their 14 third-down attempts while mustering only 56 yards on the ground, outgained by the Demon Deacons by a total of 157 yards.

“The tone was set after Wake Forest’s opening drive, when the Demon Deacons recovered their own fumble and returned it for a 50-yard touchdown.”

USA TODAY

“This game saw UNC’s defense get some stops early in the first half, allowing just 14 points. One of those touchdowns was on a fumble recovery from Wake Forest in which they took it 51 yards for the opening score.

“After that, it was big plays that doomed them. Wake Forest had a 70-yard touchdown as well as a few explosive plays. That’s the sign of a defense that is tired and struggling with having to make stops every drive they are on the field. Without much offense to back them up, they are getting put in tough situations.

“North Carolina has put themselves in a tough spot with just two games remaining. With only four wins, the Tar Heels now need to win their final two games in order to become bowl eligible. And those two games are against in-state rivals who have had UNC’s number the past few seasons.”

CBS Sports

“In the final minute of Wake Forest’s 28-12 win over North Carolina, Demon Deacons quarterback Robby Ashford scored a 2-yard touchdown on fourth down, and the move didn’t seem to sit well with Tar Heels coach Bill Belichick.

“(Quarterback Robby) Ashford scored with 22 seconds left after UNC called its final timeout. The Demon Deacons called three consecutive rushing plays with a nine-point lead and the Tar Heels running out of time.”

Pro Football Talk

“The closest the game got was 14-9 in the third quarter. Ultimately, Wake Forest scored four touchdowns, and North Carolina scored four field goals. (Two other attempts were blocked.)

“What they are is 4-6. With two games left, they need to win both to become bowl eligible. They finish with games against 5-5 Duke and 5-5 N.C. State. Win both, and North Carolina will be eligible to extend its season by one game.”

Sports Illustrated

“Despite having one of the ACC’s lowest-ranked offenses, Wake Forest outgained the Tar Heels 414-257. The offense struggled, but defensive lapses—often forced by offensive mistakes—kept UNC’s defense on the field for much of the game. While changes are needed on offense, they seem unlikely to come."
