50 Years Ago

Esther Boyle, 65, retired at the end of the school year after 25 years as a nurse in the city’s schools. Mrs. Boyle, who worked at The Cooley Dickinson Hospital and Northampton State Hospital before joining the schools, said that her successor must have “patience and understanding.” She was a nurse in the high school at her retirement and had worked in most other city schools.

Overseeing recreation program activities in Northampton this summer are Mike Noonan and Kaye Diemand, special activities supervisors, and Karen Larkin and Denise Wood, supervisor generals. Barbara Kimble is arts and crafts supervisor.

25 Years Ago

Massachusetts Highway Commissioner Matthew J. Amorello said Thursday that by the end of July, one lane on the Calvin Coolidge Memorial Bridge will be closed and reconstruction will begin, even if the high-tech traffic management system is not ready.

At the end of a picnic at Look Park’s Dow Pavilion Thursday, Mayor Clare Higgins announced she is officially running for a second term. She listed some of the accomplishments of her first term, including a push forward for development of the Northampton State Hospital property.

The four candidates vying for an at-large City Council seat squared off at a forum Monday night, addressing the budget, public schools and the local economy, among other issues. Blue DuVal, Marlene A. Morin, Ryan O’Donnell and Andrew B. Smith are running for the at-large seat vacated by Jesse Adams.

Jackson Street School students, faculty and parents walked for 24 hours recently to raise money for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Hampshire County in honor of the late Paula Welchman, their teacher, colleague and friend.
