Travelers with a flight scheduled this weekend should be sure to check that it hasn’t been cancelled, as airports around the country make cuts due to the federal government shutdown.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced this week that he was ordering a 10% cut in flights at 40 major airports, including Boston’s Logan International Airport, due to air traffic control staffing shortages caused by the federal government shutdown.

He said the cuts would start with a 4% reduction on Friday, then increase to 10%.

Officials at Logan said Thursday they were already starting to see cancellations.

The affected flights are scheduled from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. International flights are exempt.

There are several ways to check your flight status. The website FlightAware tracks cancellations and delays, or you can check with your airline directly. Most airlines — including major ones such as American Airlines, Delta, JetBlue and United Airlines — allow you to check the status by entering the flight number on their website.

If you are flying into or out of Boston, you can also check your flight status on the Logan Airport website.

The federal government has been shut down since Oct. 1 due to a deadlock in Congress over Democrats’ insistence on health care funding. It has become the longest shutdown in the country’s history.

This has left about 13,000 air traffic controllers and 50,000 Transportation Security Administration officers across the country working without pay for over a month, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. This has led to staffing shortages.

Until this week, Boston had not been affected by the staffing shortages, but was still seeing delays due to weather conditions or ongoing construction on one of the runways, which is expected to continue through mid-November.
